Mae Hong Son can be divided into 2 major groups:

  1. Tai Yai descendants the province’s major population, Tai Yai people migrated from Shan Sate in the Republic of the Uinion of Myanmar. They are most noticeable in their religious faith and practice in Buddhism.
  2. Ethnic groups (tribesmen) these can be divided into 7 ethnic groups, namely Karen, Lahu, Lisu, Lawa, Miao, Chinese Yunnan and Pa-O.



Moste religious followers in Mae Hong Son, namely 77.50%, believe in Buddhism, followed by Christianity at 20.90% and Islam at 0.50 %. About 1.10% believes in animism and other religions.


Lingual Culture 

The Tai Yai people have their own language called” Kamtai”. When talking, it is referred to as “Uptai”. Though similar to Thai language, it may be hard to grasp when spoken in long sentences, but will be more comprehensible when separated in single words. The written alphabets are called”Leektai”, in use since the olden days, with round alphabets like those of Peguan and Myanma’s.

The Karen and Haw have their own spoken and written language.

The Lahu, Lisu and Lua have their spoken language but written language was borrowed from English.



The secondary education service area 34 (Chiang Mai-Mae Hong Son) is responsible for 8 secondary schools in Mae Hong Son.

Mae Hong Son’s elementary education service area is divided into 2 areas, i.e. area 1 responsible for districts of Mueang Mae Hong Son, Pia, Pang Mapha and Khun Yuam, while area 2 for districts of Mae Sariang, Mae La Noi and Sop Moei.

The special education center of Mae Hong Son takes care of 1 educational provision to the handicapped in one unit.

There are 13 border patrol police schools and learning centers under supervision of the border patrol squadrons 336 and 337. 

Non-formal education promoted by office of the non-formal education and informal learning of Mae Hong Son provided basic integrated adult education, distance continuing education, vocational adult learning, distance high vocational certificate, vocational certificate and community-based

Education in higher education institutes such as  Chiang Mai Rajabhat University, Mae Hong Son Campus, Mae Hong Son community college, Nawamintrachinee Maehongson Industrial and Community education college, Mae Sariang vocational college.

All member schools in Mae Hong Son, all of which total 231 units.


Public Health Data 

Health facilities there are 1 general hospital accomodating 150 beds, 1 community hospital accommodating 90 beds, 1 community hospital accommodating 60 beds, 4 hospitals accommodating 30 beds, 72 tambon health promoting hospitals, scattering in 7 districts. 

There are 63 public health centers, 10 insect-induced disease control centers, 15 malaria clinics, 21 community malaria centers, 1 health service under responsibility of the medical department, Thanyarak Hospital, Mae Hong Son, accommodating 75 beds.  

Data on morbidity 5 causes of out-patients morbidity listed in descending order include symptoms and abnomality clinically diagnosed, respiratory tract disease, gastrointestinal tract disease and oral diseases, muscle disease, diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue, and vascular disease.
